Urgent call for increased focus on children's rights by UNICEF and Children's Association - Advocacy for Enhanced Child Rights Recognition by Children's Aid and UNICEF

In a significant step forward for child advocacy in Germany, a 'House of Children's Rights' was unveiled at a momentous event held in front of the iconic Brandenburg Gate. This architectural landmark, constructed from over a thousand demands and wishes sent by young people from across the country, serves as a powerful testament to their voices being heard and their rights being recognised.

The initiative to incorporate children's rights into the Basic Law of the Federal Republic of Germany was notably pushed by the Berufsverband Deutscher Psychologinnen und Psychologen (BDP) around 2025. This professional association of psychologists emphasised the need for constitutional recognition to secure children’s rights in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, the exact individual or entity that first started this initiative in 2021 remains undisclosed in the available search results.

The BDP, along with other advocates such as Holger Paech, the Child and Youth Commissioner of Saxony-Anhalt, have been strong proponents of this cause. The demands that formed the basis of this movement encompassed protection from violence, the right to education, and the right to participation. Additionally, the event called for politics that take children's rights more seriously.

The event, held on World Children's Day - a recommendation of the United Nations from 1954 - saw the gathering of the Children's Aid Organization and UNICEF in Berlin, Germany. The 'House of Children's Rights' was presented at this occasion, symbolising the collective commitment to upholding and promoting children's rights.

Furthermore, it was stated unequivocally that children's rights are non-negotiable, reinforcing the importance of this movement and the need for continued advocacy to ensure the wellbeing and protection of the nation's young citizens. This milestone serves as a beacon of hope for children's rights advocates worldwide, inspiring similar initiatives and reinforcing the importance of listening to and empowering the voices of future generations.
