Special Olympics Bavarian State Games 2025: A Celebration of Inclusion and Sport

The Special Olympics Bavarian State Games 2025 took place in Erlangen from July 14 to 18, 2025, marking a significant event in the promotion of inclusion and sport for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Hosting over 3,000 visitors and athletes, the games were the biggest inclusive sporting event in Bavaria that year, held at the Kulturinsel Wöhrmühle festival grounds.

The opening ceremony, held on July 14, was a colourful and emotional event, emphasizing inclusion and mutual respect. Erlangen’s Mayor Jörg Volleth and Bavarian Minister of State Joachim Herrmann highlighted the importance of these games in promoting participation for people with intellectual disabilities in Bavaria.

The games are part of the Special Olympics movement, which aims to help athletes demonstrate their skills, self-esteem, and belonging through sports. The programme included various sports competitions, involving local clubs like TV 1848 Erlangen, which actively participated with athletes and supportive events.

Lebenshilfe Fürth, a local organisation committed to diversity and inclusion, proudly took part in the games, with 21 athletes from the Dambacher workshops and Hallemann School competing in swimming, football, and table tennis. The team spirit among the athletes was euphoric, as the games strengthened the communal feeling and self-confidence of the participants.

The SOBY in Erlangen welcomed over 1,300 athletes from 140 delegations, including international guests from Italy, Austria, Poland, and Switzerland. The games, under the motto "Strong Together!", were not just a sporting highlight but also fostered a unique atmosphere for enthusiasts to cheer on the athletes. Medals were contested in 19 sports, including beach volleyball and new disciplines like roller skating.

In a show of social responsibility, Sparkasse Fürth donated 3,000 euros to Lebenshilfe Fürth, which was used for the purchase of sports equipment and training measures for the athletes. This donation enabled active participation of the athletes in the games. The closing event of the SOBY was celebrated with an athlete's disco on the town hall square in Erlangen on July 18.
