In the northern outskirts of Kolkata, a shocking incident has taken place at the Rajarhat Annakali Girls High School, sparking widespread outrage and criticism. The incident, which occurred at a girls' high school, has been captured on video and gone viral on social media.
The video shows a police officer, identified as Jonaki Bagchi, the inspector-in-charge of the Rajarhat Police Station, physically assaulting girl students at the school. The Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, shared the video on his social media handle, claiming that Officer Bagchi was seen 'touching and even punching female students' to suppress their protest.
The students were protesting against the prolonged absence of their Bengali teacher who had reportedly not attended school for eight months. The BJP has threatened to take up the issue in a major way, including legal steps, and also draw the attention of the National Commission for Women, unless the state government initiates disciplinary action against Officer Bagchi.
More than eight thousand government schools have been shut down in the state, according to Adhikari, and the condition of the schools still functioning is so poor that students from middle- and lower-middle-class families are being compelled to spend from their own pockets to study in private schools. The BJP leader accused the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's administration of ruining the state's education system.
Senior officials of Bidhannagar Police Station declined to comment, and leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress also remained silent, faced with the embarrassment of the video going viral. The incident has sparked particularly fierce criticism from the Opposition, with the Leader of the Opposition closely monitoring the developments regarding Officer Bagchi.
The allegations against Officer Bagchi have sparked a heated debate, with many expressing their concern for the safety and well-being of the young students involved. The state government has yet to make a statement regarding the incident, and it remains to be seen how they will respond to the growing calls for action.
