The Program on Negotiation (PON) convened a two-day summit on artificial intelligence (AI) and negotiation on March 8 and 9, 2025. The event, held at Harvard University, brought together leading experts from various institutions to discuss the role of AI in negotiation and mediation.

Zilin Ma from Harvard University presented on designing AI for context analysis in humanitarian frontline negotiations. Her talk focused on the potential of AI in understanding complex social and political situations, thereby aiding in more effective negotiations.

Michiel Bakker from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology presented on The Habermas Machine, AI's potential for helping humans find common ground in democratic deliberation. Bakker's discussion highlighted the possibilities of AI in facilitating productive discussions and decision-making processes.

The summit also featured panels on AI as a Researcher, Negotiator or Mediator, Coach, Teacher, and the uses of AI in the field. Ray Friedman led the AI as a Researcher panel, while Jared Curhan chaired the AI Negotiation Competitions panel. Lawrence Susskind led the AI as a Teacher panel, and Michael Morris led the AI as a Coach panel.

In the AI as a Negotiator and Mediator panel, Jonathan Gratch took the lead, with Michelle Vaccaro, Mike Lewis, and Min Kyung Lee as presenters. The AI Negotiation Competitions panel, chaired by Jared Curhan, saw the presence of Joel Leibo, Jonathan Mell, and Robert Axelrod as presenters.

The Teaching Negotiation Resource Center (TNRC) played a significant role in the summit. The centre offers over 250 negotiation exercises and role-play simulations, critical case studies, enlightening periodicals, more than 30 videos, and 100+ books for educational purposes. TNRC resources are used in college classroom settings, corporate training settings, by mediators and facilitators, and by individuals seeking to enhance negotiation skills.

The TNRC negotiation exercises and teaching materials introduce participants to new negotiation and dispute resolution tools, techniques, and strategies. They are also used to introduce students to key concepts while addressing the theory and practice of negotiation. TNRC resources are available for some of its most popular simulations in all-in-one curriculum packages.

Related posts on the TNRC website include teaching students to negotiate in the technology industry, negotiating cross-border water conflicts, planning for cyber defense of critical urban infrastructure, learning from the best with the Great Negotiator Case Studies, and checking out the all-in-one curriculum packages.

Jeanne Brett from Northwestern University led the AI in the Field panel, while Samuel "Mooly" Dinnar was a presenter in the AI as a Teacher panel. Laura Wang and Emmanuel Dorley were presenters in the AI as a Teacher panel as well.

Specific details about the researchers and their institutions who participated in the AI Conversation Research Summit and led panel discussions on the use of AI in roles such as researcher, negotiator, mediator, trainer, teacher, and in the field are not publicly available.

The summit concluded with a thought-provoking exploration of AI's potential in negotiation and mediation, highlighting the need for continued research and development in this area. As AI continues to evolve, its role in resolving conflicts and facilitating productive discussions is set to become increasingly significant.
