The University of Duisburg-Essen is set to become a hub for AI-based products and business models, thanks to a new project called SMART GUIDE. Funded by Start-up Center.NRW and the European Union, the project aims to digitally reimagine and accelerate university entrepreneurship.

At the heart of the project is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the university's entrepreneurship centre, GUIDE. This centre supports the transformation of innovative ideas into viable start-ups, enhancing strategic IT/IS management and innovation processes.

Prof. Dr. Hannes Rothe, the coordinator of the SMART GUIDE project and holder of the Rhine-Ruhr Institute of Information Systems chair, leads the project's application of AI in strategic IT management. The goal is to optimize the startup development pipeline, making it more efficient and effective.

The project uses AI to aid in decision-making, resource allocation, knowledge management, and personalized entrepreneurial support. By analysing large data sets and predicting successful startup ventures, the SMART GUIDE project aims to provide a more data-driven and scalable approach to university entrepreneurship.

While specific details about the AI applications in the SMART GUIDE project are not yet fully disclosed, related research themes at the university's Social Computing Group suggest the project will incorporate advanced AI techniques like knowledge graphs, graph convolutional networks, and explainable AI.

The SMART GUIDE project will also develop new use cases in areas like health, logistics, and 5G/6G through events like "AI for Good" hackathons. It will also leverage experiences from the Excellence Start-up Center.NRW initiative to automate the founding process via AI.

The project will feature an AI manufacturing lab, providing specialized training and AI software solutions to founding teams. It will also coordinate with leading accelerator programs like the BRYCK Startup Alliance and UNITE - KI Entrepreneurship Zentrum (K.I.E.Z.).

For more information about the SMART GUIDE project, contact Prof. Dr. Hannes Rothe at [email protected] or Sophia Herrlich, the editor of the project, at [email protected]. The University of Duisburg-Essen can be reached at Tel. 0203/379-5193.

The SMART GUIDE project is part of a larger network of national and European initiatives, such as ZaKI.D, EHDS4ALL, and KI4KMU at the Lower Rhine. It aims to foster a thriving ecosystem of AI-focused start-ups, making the University of Duisburg-Essen a beacon for AI innovation in Germany and beyond.
