Braunschweig's Schools to Launch Sustainable, Healthy Lunch Concept in 2026

Braunschweig's comprehensive schools are set to introduce a new, sustainable, and healthy school lunch concept from the 2026/2027 academic year. The social security administration has proposed a plan that aligns with the German Nutrition Society's quality standard, offering flexibility and choice in meals.

The concept prioritises three central goals: providing healthy and balanced meals, promoting sustainable catering, and ensuring continuous quality improvement. Canteens will feature self-service options, allowing students to compose their meals according to their preferences.

To ensure all students can participate, a hardship fund will offer a 50% discount to families at risk of poverty but not eligible for the Education and Participation Pact (BuT). This fund will be available starting from the 2026/2027 school year. Additionally, a pilot project will test student feedback options to involve the school community in meal quality development.

The new school lunch concept aims to promote students' health, strengthen community, and provide delicious meals. It is economically and ecologically sustainable, with increased plant-based products and reduced waste. While the operating organisation remains undetermined, the social security administration's proposal focuses on quality, sustainability, and inclusivity, ensuring no student misses out on school lunch.
