China Unveils New Heavy Transport Aircraft Concept for Global PLA Operations
China is developing a new heavy transport aircraft concept, aiming to enhance the People's Liberation Army's global logistics and troop movements. The blended-wing-body (BWB) design promises improved aerodynamics, increased internal cargo volume, and the ability to operate at high altitudes and from short runways.
The aircraft, designed to carry up to 120 tons of payload with a maximum takeoff weight of around 470 tons, boasts an over 21-meter-long and 5-meter-high cargo bay. This space can accommodate up to 117 light vehicles or 300 troops. The BWB design allows it to take off from semi-prepared runways as short as 2,600 meters even with a full payload.
The aircraft's projected range of 6,500 kilometers while fully loaded and cruising at Mach 0.85 enables intercontinental operations without refueling. It can also operate at altitudes up to 4,000 meters with lighter loads, supporting missions in high-altitude regions. Moreover, the aircraft supports precision airdrop operations and can maneuver at 3G during heavy cargo release or airborne troop insertion.
The project aligns with the PLA's broader modernization efforts to enhance long-range logistics, global air mobility, and expeditionary support. While the United States and its allies are developing advanced military airlift capabilities in response to China's strategic transport aircraft challenge, China has not yet announced a prototype or flight testing timeline for this new aircraft.
China's new heavy transport aircraft concept, with its advanced BWB design and impressive capabilities, is set to significantly enhance the PLA's global reach. As the project progresses, it will be crucial to monitor its development and assess its impact on global military airlift capabilities.
