In the heart of Minneapolis, the Annunciation Catholic School community and beyond have come together to support the Bisek family, particularly 11-year-old Genevieve Bisek, who is recovering in the Hennepin County Medical Center after a tragic shooting at the Church of Annunciation.

Genevieve, a sixth grader known for her sensitivity and compassion, has been surrounded by an outpouring of love from her community. Handmade cards from fellow classmates are taped to the walls of her hospital room, while ribbons and online donations have helped the family cope with their trauma.

The shooting, which occurred during a Mass at the school's auditorium, resulted in the deaths of two students, including Fletcher Merkel, a neighbour and friend of the Bisek family. Genevieve, who was conscious after the incident, asked about the other children upon waking up.

The Mass, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Zehren, was meant to welcome the light of a new day amidst the darkness. Father Zehren spoke of hope for better days, emphasising God's power to bring light and hope after tragedy. He mentioned that even in the most intense darkness, the light seems to shine even more brightly.

Sadly, the shooter, 23-year-old Robin Westman, died by suicide. Westman fired 116 rifle rounds through the church's stained-glass windows, leaving 18 people wounded, nearly all of them children.

As of now, Genevieve's condition has been upgraded from critical to satisfactory. At least seven people were still in the hospital on Saturday, including five children and one adult.

The community's resilience was on full display during the Mass held on Saturday night. However, the name of the speaker for the sermon at the Annunciation School fair that evening is not publicly available.

Despite the unimaginable tragedy, the Bisek family and the Annunciation community continue to find solace in the support of their community, as they look forward to brighter days ahead.
