Climate Change Threatens Beer Industry with Shortages and Price Hikes
Climate change is poised to significantly impact the beer industry, with potential shortages and price hikes on the horizon. Extreme weather events, like those near me, could see the cost of a pint soar by up to $4.84 in Ireland, according to a study in Nature Plants.
The study predicts that climate change will not only alter weather patterns but also impact beer consumption and prices. Extreme droughts and heat waves, which are becoming more frequent and intense in barley-growing regions, threaten global beer production. Craft brewers are already feeling the pinch, with near escapes in barley and hop production.
Under extreme climate events, American beer prices could rise by up to $1.94. The study warns that global beer consumption could decline by 16% and prices could double due to severe climate events. In Europe, Irish consumers might see the price of a pint rise by $4.84, followed by $4.52 in Italy and $4.34 in Canada. Climate change may also force farmers to feed barley to livestock instead of selling it to breweries during shortages.
The craft beer industry is taking these warnings seriously and planning for the future. Budweiser, for instance, is investing in new breeds of drought-resistant barley strains to adapt to climate change. As the world warms, the beer industry is bracing for significant changes in production, availability, and cost.
