Coca-Cola Introduces New Cane Sugar Soda in US This Fall
Coca-Cola is set to introduce a new soda made with cane sugar in the US this fall. This addition to the existing lineup is not a news today replacement for the classic Coke recipe, but rather an alternative for American consumers who prefer to avoid high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS).
The new product will be made with cane sugar, which is derived from the sugarcane plant and is less processed than granulated sugar. This results in a light golden color, larger crystals, and a stronger molasses flavor. In contrast, HFCS is a liquid sweetener made from corn starch that is cheaper and has a longer shelf life. However, both sweeteners are linked to health issues like heart disease and diabetes when consumed excessively, with HFCS potentially having a slightly higher ratio of fructose to glucose.
The key difference in carbohydrate composition between the new cane sugar soda and the classic Coke is that the former will contain some additional minerals and vitamins, along with a malty caramel note, due to the use of beet syrup in its production. This is because beet syrup contains about 65-70% sugar, along with these extra nutrients, while cane sugar is typically purified crystallized sucrose without these extra nutrients.
The introduction of the new cane sugar soda is timely, given that most Americans consume more than the recommended limit of added sugars, with some estimates putting average intake at 17 teaspoons a day. Federal guidelines recommend keeping added sugars to under 10% of daily calories, which is about 12 teaspoons or 50 grams on a 2,000-calorie diet. A 12-ounce can of Coke contains 39 grams of sugar, nearly 10 teaspoons, according to Coca-Cola. The new product, therefore, offers American Coke drinkers a healthier alternative to their favorite beverage.
