Colleges at historically black universities in Virginia lift restrictions following cancellations due to safety threats
On Thursday, Virginia State University (VSU) and Hampton University found themselves in an unexpected situation as both institutions were placed on lockdown. No injuries or incidents were reported on either campus, but the reasons behind the threats remain unclear.
In a letter addressed to the VSU community, President Makolla Abdullah stated that the threats against VSU are targeted attacks on institutions that have long stood as pillars of excellence, empowerment, and progress. He emphasised the university's commitment to working closely with law enforcement to investigate the matter. Anyone with information about the threats at VSU can contact police at (804) 524-5411.
Similarly, Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams shared a video statement on social media, expressing his concern for the safety and security of the Hampton University community. He announced that all campus activities and classes for Thursday and Friday would be cancelled, with students not attending classes on Friday. Most operations at Hampton University will return to normal, according to school officials.
The lockdown at VSU has since been lifted, but all afternoon classes and extracurricular activities were cancelled. Meanwhile, at Hampton University, most restrictions have been lifted after the FBI found no credible threat.
It's important to note that these bomb threats against historically Black colleges and universities have been linked broadly to political extremism and violence associated with far-right groups in the U.S. around September 2025. However, no information was given about any arrests or suspects in relation to the threats at VSU.
In a separate incident, a Virginia physical therapist was arrested in connection to a sexual assault of a patient. This event does not seem directly related to the lockdown at VSU or Hampton University.
Extra security is on campus and monitoring VSU-run off-campus housing to ensure the safety of students. VSU and Hampton University officials encourage anyone with information about the threats to come forward and contact the police.
As both institutions work to maintain a safe environment for their students, faculty, and staff, the community remains vigilant and hopeful for a swift resolution to this unsettling situation.
