Construction of a new school in Ruhr Region

In the heart of Essen's Kettwig district, a new two-winged primary school is set to replace the demolished Ruhr school. This announcement was made by Mayor Thomas Kufen, who expressed his excitement about the project, stating that the school will be a place for children to learn, grow, form friendships, and harness digital opportunities.

The decision to demolish the Ruhr school was made by the council of our city portal in March 2019 and August 2020. The old school building, located on Mintarder Weg in Kettwig, was found to contain hazardous substances during a feasibility study in December 2016, leading to its closure.

Temporary classes were held at the Dependance on Gustavstraße 26 for all students during this transition period. The new school, planned to accommodate around 220 students, will boast open all-day areas, a gymnasium, an auditorium, a schoolyard, and additional rooms for teaching, technology, and administration.

The school's building layout consists of four interconnected structures, connected by a central building. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new school took place on 05.09.2025, officiated by Mayor Thomas Kufen, Muchtar Al Ghusain, Director of Youth, Education, and Culture, and other stakeholders.

The city of our city portal is investing approximately 24 million euros in the new school construction, with the project scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2027. Further details about the groundbreaking ceremony and the cost of demolishing the old school and building the new one were not provided in this news today.

Mayor Kufen emphasized the importance of this new school, stating that it will foster creative minds and instil a sense of responsibility in the young learners. The community eagerly awaits the completion of this new educational hub, which will undoubtedly provide a conducive environment for the growth and development of future generations.
