Another method for detecting adulterated milk is the water detection test. By placing a drop of milk on a clean, smooth, slanted surface, if the drop flows quickly and leaves no trace behind, the milk is likely diluted with water. Pure milk moves slowly and leaves a white trail.

Detergents or soap may also be added to milk to improve texture and mimic natural milk fat. To check for detergent, consumers can shake a small amount of milk in a transparent bottle or glass. If the milk produces excessive froth or bubbles, it may contain detergent or soap. Synthetic milk might also smell like soap and feel soapy to the touch.
