Why is relevance so important? At the core of our being, we yearn for a sense of belonging that challenges the status quo. We're built to make a difference, to influence the trajectories of others' lives. And to do that, we need to feel relevant.

Now, we're jumping right into the heart of emotional intelligence here – EQ. Are you truly listening to your team on a deep level? Can you articulate their interests better than they can?

Let's dive into some examples, both good and bad.

A shining example comes from a top-notch venture capital firm. Their two managing partners have a knack for making every associate feel relevant. They brag about their team’s accomplishments, and everybody feels it. This sense of relevance catalyzes positive energy and unstoppable team culture.

On the flip side, there's an RIA I coached a few years back. The founder had some promise, but their negativity was palpable. They demeaned associates and clients alike, making the whole place toxic. Nobody felt relevant in this soul-draining environment.

Words matter, especially how they're delivered. Are you self-aware enough to realize how your words affect the perceived relevance of your team? Do you care?

Now, to touch on theology for a moment – "violent men get rich." There's truth in that. Work in such places can be miserable. If you're in one, it's time to pack up and hunt for a culture where your leader asks themselves, "How relevant do my team members feel towards this organization's success?"
