Cyberattacks Surge 41% in Education Sector, Urgent Action Needed
Cybersecurity threats are escalating, particularly in the education sector, with educational facilities becoming prime targets. A recent study by Check Point Research (CPR) reveals a 41% year-on-year increase in attacks against businesses between January and July 2025. North America has been especially hard hit, with a 67% rise in attacks against educational institutions.
The education sector is now the most attacked globally, averaging 4,356 incidents per organization per week. This is concerning, given the dependence of educational facilities on online platforms and their often limited business cybersecurity budgets. APAC is another hotspot, with an average of 7,869 attacks per organization per week. The outlook is bleak without significant action.
Businesses are urged to bolster their cybersecurity measures. This includes increasing budgets, investing in new talent, and upskilling employees. However, only 2% of bosses can identify all signs of a phishing attack, indicating a widespread lack of awareness. Education, government, telecommunications, and healthcare are the top four most targeted industries worldwide, making robust cybersecurity a critical concern for businesses.
The escalating threat of cyberattacks, particularly in the education sector, underscores the need for immediate and serious action. Businesses must prioritize cybersecurity, investing in talent and awareness to better protect against evolving threats. The future of cybersecurity in the business world hangs in the balance.
