Cyberattacks Surge, Education Sector Under Siege
Cyberattacks are surging, particularly targeting educational institutions. A recent study reveals alarming trends in this sector and across different regions.
The education sector is bearing the brunt globally, with an average of 4,356 attacks per organization each week. This makes it the most targeted industry, ahead of government, telecommunications, and healthcare. The situation is especially dire in the APAC region, where organizations face an average of 7,869 attacks per week.
In North America, educational institutions have seen a 67% year-on-year increase in cyberattacks. This spike is part of a broader trend: 78% of companies worldwide have been targeted with ransomware in the last year. The recent months have been particularly challenging, with a 41% year-on-year increase in cyberattacks at educational facilities between January and July 2025.
The education sector's vulnerability to cyberattacks is clear, with staggering numbers of attacks per week. The situation is worsening, as evidenced by the recent surge in attacks. Businesses across all sectors are also at risk, with ransomware attacks becoming increasingly common. As the threat evolves, so too must our defenses.
