Desired Compensation and Expectations from Work among the Young Generation
In a recent survey conducted by Confartigianato Imprese Piemonte Orientale, Università del Piemonte Orientale (UPO), and the Monte Rosa, Laghi, Alto Piemonte Chamber of Commerce, the factors young people consider when choosing a job have been revealed. The survey involved a sample of 1,000 Italian young people aged 18 to 39.
Among the challenges faced by heavy vehicle drivers, traffic, limited career prospects, and low client appreciation were highlighted. However, the survey focused on the logistics and transport sector, which young people associate with negative aspects such as loneliness and hard work.
The main obstacles to finding work, according to respondents, are insufficient candidate experience (38.9%) and difficulties in managing free time (35.9%). Compensation was ranked as the most important factor in choosing a job by 81.2% of respondents, yet the survey's findings suggest that young people consider multiple factors when choosing a job, not just compensation.
Beyond compensation, young people in Italy value several important factors. These include:
- Work environment and ethical standards: Safe, ethical, and well-monitored workplaces are valued, as highlighted by legal and regulated recruitment practices in sectors like tourism.
- Opportunities for skill development and experience: Positions offering training and a chance to gain experience, especially in desirable sectors such as tourism or international fields, appeal to young workers.
- Legal and contract security: Having a legal work contract with full documentation and visa/work permit compliance is a key consideration for job security, especially for foreign youth.
- Possibility of contract renewal or continuity: Young workers often look for job stability or chances to extend employment beyond seasonal or short-term contracts.
- Language skills and cultural environment: Basic Italian or English knowledge facilitates job integration and opportunities; language and cultural fit can influence job preference.
- Work-life balance and social engagement: Although not explicitly detailed in the search results, the emphasis on ethical workplaces and youth-focused conventions in Italy suggests that social impact, networking, and participation in youth-focused events are also valued.
66.2% of respondents preferred stable contracts (permanent employment), and 74.4% of respondents prioritized safe working conditions. Moreover, 57.5% of respondents indicated that the accessibility of information and support for writing a curriculum vitae could speed up the job search process.
Rossano Denetto suggested that a new regulation of driving and rest times could help many young people enter the world of transport. The survey did not specify which other factors, aside from compensation, are important to young people when choosing a job. However, the survey's main conclusion is that multiple factors, not just compensation, are important to young people when choosing a job.
- Young Italian professionals are prioritizing work environments that uphold ethical standards and are well-monitored in their pursuit of suitable employment.
- The opportunity for skill development and valuable work experience in sectors like tourism or the international field has significant appeal to young workers.
- Job security, obtained through legal work contracts with proper documentation and adherence to visa/work permit regulations, is a crucial factor for young people in Italy.
- Stable contracts (permanent employment) and safe working conditions are high priorities for the majority of Italian young job seekers.
- Adequate support and access to information for writing a curriculum vitae can accelerate the job-seeking process for many young people in Italy.
