Dryers in hands transmit significant amounts of bacteria, research shows.

Public bathrooms, intended to promote hygiene, are ironically equipped with electric hand dryers that may inadvertently contaminate hands and the surrounding air, according to new research from the University of Leeds in the UK.

In an experiment mimicking improperly washed hands, researchers found that jet-air and warm air hand dryers can actively spread bacteria. In fact, these devices could blast bacteria into the air at rates 27 times higher than paper towels, the study revealed.

The alarming findings indicate that the assumption of drying hands with high-powered air being a clean and efficient process might not be accurate. To measure bacterial spread, microbiologist Mark Wilcox and his team at the University of Leeds conducted a controlled study using harmless Lactobacilli bacteria.

Years of high-velocity air may be blowing bacteria into the air instead of banishing it, the researchers discovered. After performing 120 air-sampling tests, the authors of the study found that:

  • Jet-air dryers, which operate at around 640 km/h, dispersed 4.5 times more bacteria into the air compared to paper towels.
  • Older warm air dryers continued the trend, spreading bacteria 27 times more than paper towels.
  • Bacteria remained airborne beyond the drying process, lingering for over five minutes in some instances.
  • Some bacteria particles were detected up to 15 minutes later in the air surrounding the dryer.

Volunteers' hands were coated in the bacteria and then tested using various drying methods - jet-air dryers, warm air dryers, and paper towels. These findings are concerning, especially considering the frequent use of public restrooms. Each time we dry our hands with an air dryer, we risk inadvertently spreading bacteria, not just to ourselves but also to others nearby.

Paper towels might seem less high-tech, but given the potential harm of air dryers, they could be the more suitable option for maintaining hygiene, particularly in high-risk areas like hospitals and food preparation environments. The debate continues over whether hand driers contribute to the spread of bacteria and whether we are sacrificing hygiene for convenience.
