Education Minister advocates for system overhaul in the educational sector

In the heart of Germany, the state of Brandenburg is grappling with questions surrounding its education system, with no concrete proposals for improvement or expansion of vocational training in schools coming to light as of mid-2025.

The Minister of Finance, Robert Crumbach, has been silent on the matter of potential reductions in teacher positions, as well as any plans to offset such reductions through other measures. However, he has emphasised the importance of improving teaching quality in schools.

Crumbach believes that increasing vocational training in schools is necessary and has suggested that the special fund for infrastructure, totalling 250 million euros allocated for the education system, could be utilised for school construction, technology, renovation, and modernisation. Yet, he has clarified that this fund cannot be used to provide additional teacher positions.

The Minister's stance has been met with criticism from various quarters. The SPD, which has held the position of Minister of Education for around 30 years in the state, is being criticised by the alliance Sahra Wagenknecht for not addressing necessary changes quickly enough. This criticism has been fuelled by the recent protests caused by the decreasing number of teacher positions despite the education budget growing in the state.

Crumbach, a member of BSW, has been vocal about the need for changes in Brandenburg's education system. He has questioned the appropriateness of the number of Abitur students in Brandenburg, but has not mentioned any measures to address this issue. The Minister of Finance has also remained silent on this matter, choosing not to acknowledge any criticism regarding the slow pace of necessary changes in the education system.

As for the proportion of those eligible for study in Brandenburg, it was less than half compared to their peers in 2022. Despite this, there are no specific search results detailing proposed reforms for improving the education system in Brandenburg up to August 2025.

For authoritative data on Brandenburg’s education reform or vocational training expansion, it would be necessary to consult Brandenburg’s state government or education ministry releases directly, or local official education policy documents.
