Education, secretly aiding the youth of Soong
In the vibrant city of Lapu-Lapu, on the island of Mactan, a beacon of hope and learning shines bright. This is the Hokkomslow Learning Center, a symbol of volunteerism and aid, founded by Han Joohyeon 17 years ago.
Han's journey began in the Philippines, where he found hope in the sun, warmth of the people, and the smiles of the children. This experience led him to question the reality that poverty could dictate a child's future in the Philippines. With a vision to provide education that nurtures patience, kindness, and compassion, Han established the Hokkomslow Learning Center.
The center, serving Kindergarten to Grade 3 students, offers after-school activities, literacy programs, and wellness initiatives. It doesn't just cater to regular school students but also supports Alternative Learning System (ALS) students on Fridays and Saturdays.
During the sessions, joy and enthusiasm were evident among the children who participated in storytelling and literacy classes. Teacher Baby and Mr. Gabriel lead the ALS learners, fostering a community that supports their personal and academic growth.
Recognising the need for expansion, the Hokkomslow Learning Center is now growing its footprint in Soong, Mactan. The expansion aims to provide greater access to quality educational resources, extracurricular activities, and holistic wellness initiatives that support the physical, mental, and emotional development of young learners in the area.
Key features of the expansion include additional learning spaces, enhanced educational programs, wellness activities, community engagement, and recreational facilities. The center aspires to strengthen its role as a vital community hub where children from Soong and surrounding areas can grow academically and personally in a nurturing environment.
Han believes in the power of unity between governments and communities to change the future of a generation. With this expansion, the Hokkomslow Learning Center continues to embody Han's vision, offering new opportunities, abilities, and hope to countless children in the Philippines.
