Sounding the Alarm: German Experts Warn of a Future Without NATO Amidst US Political Shifts

Encouragement for Readiness in Anticipation of a NATO-less Tomorrow

In a stark warning, top German peace and conflict researchers are urging the government to brace for a world without NATO due to escalating political turbulence in the United States. Citing a "nationalist-leaning" administration and aggressive territorial claims against allies, renowned expert Christopher Daase from the Leibniz Institute for Peace Research and International Conflict Research deemed NATO's future dubious during a presentation of the Peace Report 2025 on Monday.

Daase criticized the political landscape in the U.S. following Trump's inauguration, claiming the country has eventually morphed into an authoritarian state under the influence of his MAGA movement. Such rapid transformation, with minimal resistance, has turned the United States into yet another source of instability. He gravely stated, "The transatlantic partnership as we knew it is no more."

The potential danger to Germany and Europe from the authoritarian reshaping in the U.S. is paramount, according to the researchers. Although the Russian threat necessitates the continued existence of NATO, Europe must fortify its defenses independently and perhaps even against the U.S.

In the report, the researchers propose a transparent, phased plan for enhancing and integrating European defense structures as a solution. These recommendations could encompass bolstering the standing structured cooperation of the EU (PESCO) and joint EU missions to foster cooperation among European nations.
