Digital Saksham: Empowering Micro-Entrepreneurs Across India

Digital Saksham, an initiative led by Google India in partnership with the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, is reshaping the digital landscape in India. The project aims to streamline accessibility, interactivity, and community support, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the digital age.

The diverse training programs and resources offered by Digital Saksham cater to the evolving needs of the digital era. To encourage maximum participation, these programs are available in multiple languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, Punjabi, Malayalam, Odia, Marathi, Assamese, and Kannada.

Project Digital Saksham is particularly focused on augmenting and enriching the digital capabilities of micro-enterprises. In Odisha, trainers are working with tribal communities, helping them understand they are Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and teaching them about the state and central government's MSME schemes.

In India, the micro sector, with an estimated 630.52 lakh enterprises, accounts for over 99% of the total estimated number of 633.88 MSMEs. Digital Saksham is playing a crucial role in improving the digital skills of these entrepreneurs.

One such success story comes from Ms. Yamini Choudhary from Maharashtra, a bulk tailoring business owner. Through Digital Saksham training, she discovered the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal, which she used to showcase her products and explore potential orders on the government's platform.

The project is not limited to urban areas. In Uttar Pradesh, Digital Saksham is preserving cultural heritage and promoting economic progress by integrating modern technology with traditional handicrafts. Examples of successful digital initiatives in Uttar Pradesh include Lucknow's Digital Saree Emporium, Varanasi's Digital Silk Route, Digital Leathercraft in Sonbhadra, Digital Jewellery Atelier in Agra, and Digital Flavours in Mathura.

To resolve geographical boundaries and integrate these micro-enterprises in the formal economy, the trainers support the entrepreneurs with Udyam Registration. This allows them to showcase their products on the Government e-marketplace and other digital platforms.

Currently, the project is organising training for micro-enterprises in 13 states and 55 clusters. Digital Saksham is fostering a deeper understanding of the impact digital literacy has on personal and community development for micro-entrepreneurs, shaping a future where everyone has the opportunity to thrive in the digital age.
