In the realm of law enforcement, a shift in focus is underway, with a growing emphasis on community relationships and reflection of the communities served. This is particularly true for the Department of Interior, which manages the nation's national parks.

One proposed solution is setting targets to ensure that the law enforcement within the Department of Interior mirrors the demographics of the communities they serve. Additionally, modernizing park ranger uniforms to feel more welcoming could help bridge gaps and foster a sense of inclusivity.

The use of body cameras by park police officers is a step forward in transparency and accountability. Initiated in San Francisco, this policy is set to extend to officers across the country by the end of the year, providing assurance and fostering trust.

However, incidents between the police and the public in national parks are not currently being tracked in a central database. This lack of transparency raises concerns about accountability and the need for a team to prioritize tracking such incidents.

Regrettably, there have been instances of violence against Indigenous protesters and the unjust killing of an unarmed man, Bijan Ghaiser, by two officers outside D.C. These incidents underscore the need for reform and a renewed focus on community engagement and de-escalation training.

The U.S. Park Police, serving national parks since 1791, has faced criticism for its history of dispossession and abuse towards Indigenous peoples. Conservationists made it illegal for them to hunt and gather on their park designations, a practice that continues to have lasting effects.

In a positive development, the U.S. Park Police has its first Black woman chief, Pamela Smith, signalling a step towards greater diversity and representation.

Looking beyond the Department of Interior, initiatives such as The Wilderness Society's Urban to Wild aim to connect urban communities to nature, while the potential entry of Rep. Deb Haaland into the Interior could bring fresh perspectives on increasing accessibility for BIPOC communities.

The Biden administration could also establish new parks and monuments that celebrate forgotten history relevant to Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and queer communities, providing opportunities for education, reflection, and healing. Under President Donald Trump, park rangers moonlighted as border agents, further straining community relationships and raising concerns about the politicisation of law enforcement.

Last year, the Park Police used chemical gas against peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters at Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C., highlighting the need for a reevaluation of law enforcement tactics and a commitment to upholding the rights of all citizens.

With over 3,500 law enforcement officers, including park rangers, officers with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and special agents with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, under the Department of Interior, there is a significant opportunity for change. The path forward requires a commitment to transparency, accountability, and community engagement, ensuring that our national parks are safe, welcoming, and accessible spaces for all.
