Ensuring Safety for Students in Kücknitz: A Matter of Control

In Lübeck and its surrounding area, a recent initiative was taken by the local police to ensure the safety of student cyclists. On November 7th and 8th, 2024, targeted bicycle checks were conducted outside a primary and comprehensive school in Kücknitz.

A total of 57 bicycles were inspected, with officers identifying 24 defects, particularly focusing on the safety and roadworthiness of the bicycles. Defective brakes and insufficient or missing lighting were the most common issues.

Functional lighting is crucial for ensuring safety on the roads, especially during the dark season, and the police recommend that bicycles have front white lights and rear red lights or reflectors to ensure visibility in low light or darkness. If the lighting is not working properly, it is advisable to have a battery-operated clip-on light ready.

Cyclists, especially students, are often advised to wear reflective vests or clothing to enhance visibility to motorists, particularly during dawn, dusk, or night. Wearing reflective vests is recommended as they ensure cyclists are visible from a distance of 140 meters, significantly reducing the risk of potential accidents, especially in the rain when cyclists without lights are difficult for drivers to notice from a distance.

The police also emphasise the importance of regular bicycle checks, especially by parents and guardians. For more detailed and locally specific recommendations, it is recommended to consult local police sources or community safety announcements directly.
