Essen's Schools Get Major Digital Upgrade
Essen's schools have undergone a significant digital transformation. All 192 locations now boast modern IT infrastructure, including 4,000 interactive displays, WiFi-6 networks, and Cat 7A+ cabling. Around 75,000 iPads are centrally managed for data protection and secure operation.
The Alfried Krupp School Media Center (AKSMZ) spearheaded this project, with the Essen System House (ESH) handling network implementation. The School Department has established support structures like IT helpers, iPad consultation hours, and media cafés to assist teachers.
The city portal successfully completed the DigitalPakt Schule funding program and addendum agreements on time, within budget, and with no objections raised during inspections. This modernization, costing around 83.4 million euros, has been recognized by the gpaNRW, which awarded 98 out of 100 points for strategic management of school IT.
Essen's schools now boast state-of-the-art IT infrastructure, with 192 locations equipped with modern displays, advanced networks, and iPads for students and teachers. This comprehensive modernization, led by the AKSMZ and supported by the ESH, has been commended for its strategic management and successful implementation.
