Estonia Abolishes School Exam Retakes Next Spring
Starting next spring, Estonia will cancel the retake of school exams for secondary school graduates. The Ministry of Education aims to reduce anxiety among students and change the perception of school exams. Graduates who do not reach a 50% threshold will receive a graduation certificate without a retake. The ministry views school exams as a tool for admission to higher education, not for leaving school. However, retake will still be available for those who miss the exam for valid reasons. Educational institutions are encouraged to check graduates with low results independently, but are not obliged to do so. The abolition of repeat exams for secondary school graduates in Estonia is set to take effect next spring. The Ministry of Education hopes this change will reduce anxiety among students and alter the purpose of school exams.
