European Chemical Industry Faces Crisis: CEFIC Pushes for Urgent Action
The European chemical industry faces a severe crisis, with the rate of production site closures surging to ten times the historical average over the past two years. Soaring energy costs, tightening regulations, and geopolitical challenges have led to calls for urgent action.
CEFIC, the European Chemical Industry Council, is pushing for swift antidumping investigations to aid affected producers and diversify non-EU supply sources. Marco Mensink, CEFIC's Director General, has outlined a 10-point plan to secure the industry's future, including building regional supply networks and leveraging technology for competitiveness.
CEFIC is engaging stakeholders and supporting EU politicians, such as President Ursula von der Leyen, to implement this plan. Ilham Kadri, CEFIC's President, warns that the industry is in a race against time and needs bold, urgent action to tackle energy costs and regulatory burdens.
