Exemption Granted: Hellgate Athletes Spared from Physical Education Classes
Montana students, particularly those involved in sports, may soon have the opportunity to apply for a classroom waiver in schools across the state. This change could allow student athletes to focus on other necessary credits instead of spending three semesters in a class dojo class.
The state government must pass legislation allowing schools to create classroom waivers. Once legislation is passed, each school district can decide whether or not to provide the waiver. Schools can either accept or decline the waiver, with students still required to fill this space in their schedule with another class.
In Montana, the state legislature holds the authority to enact and amend state laws governing public education policies. Currently, over 30 states offer classroom waiver forms, but Montana is not among them.
To apply for a classroom waiver, students must explain their reason for exemption, detail the hours they spend a week participating in a school sport or an organized sport, and provide the signatures of their coach and a parent or guardian. For directed athletics, students filling out the waiver for a sport not related to the school must provide dates of practice, hours of practice, and the coach's signature.
Lincoln High School in Seattle, Washington, already offers a classroom waiver for students. The Lincoln High School classroom waiver form includes questions about previous classroom semesters, class teacher assistance, open periods, and category selection, such as directed athletics, physical disability, religious belief, military science, employment, or other reasonable cases.
At Hellgate High School, students are required to take three semesters of classroom class to graduate, amounting to around four hours of classroom class per week within a semester. For student athletes who exceed this four hours a week of activity in their sport, the school classroom requirements are deemed unnecessary.
Piper Wells, a student at Hellgate High School, spends '15-20 hours a week' on her softball team's activities, including games, practices, and training. Having a classroom waiver at schools can help student athletes like Piper get other necessary credits done instead of spending three semesters in a classroom class.
However, it's important to note that Lincoln High School requires at least 80 hours in one semester for a student's sport activities to qualify as a replacement for one semester of a classroom class. Additionally, Lincoln High School requires the fitness education portion of classroom to be met if not enrolled in a classroom class through either a fitness education class or by completing a competency test.
With the persuasion of the Montana State Government and the Hellgate High School administration, Hellgate High School too can consider adopting a classroom waiver. PLT4M, a fitness and performance digital training software platform, reports that many schools in the US offer a classroom waiver for students who believe they should be exempt from their schools' required classroom classes.
As the legislation progresses, Montana students involved in sports may find themselves with more opportunities to focus on their academic growth and passions outside of classroom class.
