Faculty Member Introduces Two Fresh Scholarship Funds

UCLA Scholarships Honour Jazz and Ethnomusicology Pioneers

In a significant move, renowned donors Eddie S. Meadows and Tom Corson have established scholarships at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Music to support students studying Global Jazz Studies and African and African-American Music.

Eddie S. Meadows, a Professor Emeritus of Ethnomusicology and Jazz Studies and Adjunct Professor in Global Jazz Studies, has established the Eddie S. Meadows Scholarship in Global Jazz Studies. This scholarship aims to support students in the Global Jazz Studies program, named after Professor Meadows himself.

In a heartfelt gesture, Meadows has also established an endowed scholarship fund in honour of his wife, Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje, a Professor Emerita of Ethnomusicology. The Jaqueline Cogdell DjeDje Fellowship in African and African-American Music will support graduate students in the Department of Ethnomusicology.

Jacqueline Cogdell DjeDje, who taught at UCLA for 34 years, served as the director of the African-American vocal ensemble and was invited to be the School of Music's 2019 Commencement Speaker earlier this year.

Tom Corson, a record executive and the inaugural chair of the UCLA School of Music Business board of advisors, has a significant role within the UCLA music community. He is known for supporting music education financially, including establishing scholarships specifically in African and African-American Music at UCLA.

The inaugural recipients of both scholarships will be selected next academic year. Ava Sadripour can be contacted at 310-206-5645 or our website to contribute in honour of Professors Meadows and DjeDje.

The Jaqueline Cogdell DjeDje Fellowship in African and African-American Music will support graduate students in the Department of Ethnomusicology next academic year, while the Eddie S. Meadows Scholarship in Global Jazz Studies will support students in the Global Jazz Studies program.

The Jaqueline Cogdell DjeDje Fellowship in African and African-American Music was established to support students studying African and African-American music, while the Eddie S. Meadows Scholarship in Global Jazz Studies was established to support students studying Global Jazz Studies.

These scholarships are a testament to the dedication of Meadows and Corson to supporting music education and celebrating the achievements of the pioneering professors DjeDje and Meadows.

Through the Eddie S. Meadows Scholarship in Global Jazz Studies, students in the program named after him will receive support for their education and self-development. Additionally, the Jaqueline Cogdell DjeDje Fellowship in African and African-American Music will provide graduate students in Ethnomusicology with opportunities for learning and growth in their studies.
