Florida Cabinet Approves Major Land Preservation Projects in Okeechobee and Hardee Counties
The Florida Cabinet has approved significant land preservation projects in Okeechobee and Hardee counties. These moves aim to protect vital water resources and habitats, ensuring the well-being of over one million residents.
In Okeechobee County, a vast area encompassing the headwaters of the Everglades will be preserved. This includes protecting the Kissimmee River and Lake Okeechobee, crucial for water quality and flood control. Additionally, nearly 6,000 acres of ranch land have been permanently preserved.
In Hardee County, the Bentley Ranch's preservation is a major victory. Only six percent of the county's land is currently protected, making this easement crucial. The 2,559-acre preservation, approved by the Florida Cabinet, will safeguard the ranch's role in water quality and flood mitigation. The Bentley family, who have owned the ranch since the 1940s, worked with the Florida Conservation Group and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to achieve this. Bentley Ranch is also part of the Florida Wildlife Corridor, connecting protected lands and supporting regional biodiversity. Moreover, it will protect a significant portion of the Oak Creek, a tributary of the Peace River, from development.
These preservation efforts highlight Florida's commitment to protecting its natural resources and ensuring the well-being of its residents. The Okeechobee County project safeguards the Everglades and Lake Okeechobee, while the Bentley Ranch preservation in Hardee County protects vital waterways and supports biodiversity.
