Germans' Top Concerns: Migration, Climate, and Social Justice
Germans grapple with a range of pressing concerns, with migration, climate change, and social justice emerging as top issues. The latest poll reveals a shift in priorities and a growing unease about democracy and mental health.
The far-right AfD party has capitalized on concerns about migration, with 85 percent of its voters citing immigration as a key worry. Meanwhile, the CDU, led by Friedrich Merz, has also focused on migration, advocating for stricter policies. However, the climate crisis, which worries a majority of Germans, has been overshadowed by other issues. Over two-thirds of the population is concerned about social justice and poverty, with Generation Y and X showing the greatest overall worry.
Germans largely see the state and politics as responsible for combating climate change, but trust in solutions is low. Over half of Germans cite costs as a barrier to a more sustainable lifestyle. Meanwhile, concern about pandemics has decreased by ten percent since March 2023. The erosion of democracy and lack of separation of powers have risen by over six percent in concern, with mental health issues also increasing by more than seven percent.
As the German election approaches, parties are grappling with a complex web of concerns. While migration and social justice dominate, the climate crisis remains a significant worry. Trust in political solutions is low, and new issues like democracy erosion and mental health have risen to prominence. Parties will need to address these multifaceted concerns to gain electoral support.
