Government Ends Jobseeker Support for Healthy 18-19s With Affluent Parents

The Government is set to end Jobseeker Support payments for 18- and 19-year-olds whose parents earn over $65,000. This change, starting in June 2025, will impact around 4300 young people, including those with health conditions or disabilities who have had to stop work or reduce hours. Currently, about 2685 young people aged 18 and 19 are receiving Jobseeker Support due to a health condition or disability. However, the Government believes that parents should support all their children, regardless of these circumstances. The policy also affects young beneficiaries whose parents have an annual income below $65,000, although specific data on this group is not publicly available. From June 2025, approximately 4300 young people will become ineligible for Jobseeker Support due to this change. The Government's expectation is that parents will provide financial support to their children, even if they have a health condition or disability that affects their ability to work.
