Governor Hochul Enforces NY's New School Cell-Phone Ban

Governor Kathy Hochul visited M.S. 582 in East Williamsburg to enforce New York State's new cell-phone ban in schools. The visit was accompanied by Frankie Focus, a hairy green spokescreature, who helped promote the initiative.

The ban aimed to improve students' attention and teachers' experience. Administrators and staff worked diligently, sealing up hundreds of phones and ensuring students arrived to class on time. A dry run at UAGateway school helped staff figure out how to redistribute 400 phones in about five minutes in case of an emergency.

Despite some students trying to bypass the checkpoint by claiming they didn't bring their phones, or a few students being found checking smuggled screens on the first day, the ban was largely successful. Schools used various methods to secure and return phones, including labeled bubble-wrap bags and Yondr-style pouches with magnet clasps.

The cell-phone ban, enforced by Governor Hochul's visit, has shown promising results in improving the learning environment. With staff and students adapting to the new rules, the initiative is expected to continue positively impacting students' attention and teachers' experience.
