Grassroots' Tactics Guide: Harnessing Data for Political Activism
In the ever-evolving landscape of activism, The Rebel's Notebook stands as a unique and innovative resource for those fighting for change. This data-driven tool, currently in "open alpha", is designed to aid activists, trainers, and rebels in their quest for a more sustainable and equitable world.
The Rebel's Notebook is built on the Global Nonviolent Action Database (GNAD) from Swarthmore College, and it learns from user experience and feedback, improving over time. The tool's author, Jasper, is a teacher in digital design and social design at the University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht, with a masters in Data Driven Design. He aims to help designers see the impact they have on the world.
The tool is divided into three main sections: Protest and Persuasion, Noncooperation, and Nonviolent Intervention. Each section houses a variety of methods, with the Methods Library being based on Gene Sharp's 198 Methods of Nonviolent Action, first written in 1973.
The Rebel's Notebook doesn't simply suggest tactics; it provides reasons for its recommendations. It analyses historical data, synergy score, and phase suitability to offer the most effective strategies. The tool encourages users to use recommendations as a discussion starter and apply their own critical lens.
One of the key features of The Rebel's Notebook is the Campaign Planner. Designed for real-time strategic thinking, it boasts an interactive interface that adjusts to user input. The Campaign Planner doesn't just pick popular tactics; it is based on three key pillars: Context is King, Timing Matters, and Tactics Must Work Together.
The tool also learns from over 1,400 real-world campaigns, analysing their goals, methods, opponents, and outcomes. This wealth of data allows The Rebel's Notebook to provide insights that can help activists make informed decisions about their campaigns.
As The Rebel's Notebook continues to evolve, it invites activists, trainers, and rebels to use it, test it, and help make improvements. You can contact The Rebel's Notebook through LinkedIn.
