Grocers' Association Concludes Fresh Summit 2025 Event

The National Grocers Association (NGA) hosted its annual NGA Fresh Summit from June 16-18 in Milwaukee, bringing together independent grocers from across the nation. This year's summit focused on the latest trends and strategies to drive growth, reduce shrink, and elevate the fresh experience for today's evolving shopper.

The sessions addressed topics such as AI-driven retail, smarter assortments, workable sustainability strategies, practical shrink reduction tips, premium product promotion, and expert marketing programs. These themes reflect the industry's ongoing efforts to adapt to a rapidly changing retail landscape, with a particular emphasis on leveraging technology to stay competitive.

Independent grocers met in the Nation's Capital to demand fair competition and address potential anticompetitive practices similar to those experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The NGA also warned the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) about these practices, which could potentially harm America's independent grocers.

In a dynamic showcase of innovation, technology, and community connection, the summit included insightful sessions, store tours, and networking opportunities. Attendees walked away with actionable strategies to drive growth, reduce shrink, and enhance the fresh experience for shoppers.

Jonathan Downey, COO and SVP of the Washington, D.C.-based NGA, noted that the summit was an excellent platform for independent grocers to learn, share, and connect. "The NGA Fresh Summit is a testament to the resilience and innovation of independent grocers, who continue to thrive in a competitive market," said Downey.

The first day of the summit ended with immersive local store tours at Sendik's Food Market, Woodman's Market, and El Rey Family Market. A networking event sponsored by Palermo's Pizza followed the store tours, offering attendees an opportunity to connect and share insights.

In addition to the summit, the NGA met with congressional leaders to defend key nutrition programmes and announced the recipients of the NGA Foundation scholarships, who were supported to attend the Executive Leadership Development Program. The 2025 NGA Fly-In also kicked off in D.C.

The NGA Fresh Summit 2022 underscored the importance of independent grocers in the industry and their ongoing fight against proposed SNAP cuts. By fostering innovation, technology, and community connection, the summit empowers these grocers to stay competitive and provide quality service to their customers.

  1. In the realm of education-and-self-development, the NGA Fresh Summit not only offers insightful sessions, but also provides independent grocers with practical tips to drive growth and enhance the fresh shopping experience, akin to acquiring business skills in an ever-evolving market.
  2. Furthermore, a strategic understanding of finance is critical in the grocery industry, and the NGA Fresh Summit adds value by addressing topics such as shrink reduction and leveraging technology, thereby contributing to the prosperity and sustainability of independent business ventures.
