Guidelines for Using the App
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) is inviting applications for its Postdoc Program in 2025. This program is renowned for its commitment to excellence through diversity and offers a unique opportunity for individuals who have recently completed their doctoral degree in ocean, earth, atmospheric sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, environmental policy, or a related field.
To apply, candidates must submit their application materials by October 9, 2025. The application package should include a curriculum vitae, a list of research achievements such as publications, presentations, and funding, a detailed summary of research achievements and future plans (approximately 3 pages), a summary of teaching experience and educational philosophy (approximately 1 page), contact information for two references, and up to five representative papers. All documents should be compiled into a single PDF and submitted either by email or via a web portal.
Candidates are required to collaborate with at least one Scripps mentor and no more than three mentors. Prior to submitting an application, applicants must contact members of the Scripps research staff working in their area of interest to initiate a potential collaboration. The potential SIO mentor(s) must provide a letter of support to be included with the application materials, which should include information on access to any facilities that will be especially important to the planned research.
Applicants are also required to arrange for at least two references who can attest to their qualifications and research abilities. External reference letters should document under what circumstances the referee has known the applicant and provide an overall evaluation of the applicant's past performance relative to other students at a comparable stage in their careers. They should detail the applicant's previous accomplishments and potential for conducting innovative research in their chosen field.
It is important to note that candidates must have no more than 3 years of postdoctoral experience at the time of appointment. External reference letters must be submitted by October 16, 2025. A courtesy grace period until October 16, 2025, will be extended for reference letters to arrive.
UCSD is an equal opportunity employer, and the SIO Postdoc Program shares similar requirements for postdoc level positions with the related Quantum and Spacetime Research Institute faculty application process.
