Israel-Iran Conflict Rooted in IAEA Resolution, Iran Files Complaint Against Grossi
The current conflict between Israel and Iran has roots in a controversial IAEA resolution, which was based on an Israeli intelligence report from 2018. The resolution, passed with a slim majority, accused Iran of non-compliance with its IAEA obligations, focusing on enrichment activities prior to 2003. Iran has since filed a complaint against the IAEA Director General, Rafael Grossi.
The IAEA investigation that led to the resolution was sparked by a 2018 Israeli intelligence report. However, Grossi has not publicly explained how the agency ensured the integrity of the evidence, raising questions about potential tampering by Israeli or Iranian actors.
Israel saw the U.S.'s role in pushing the IAEA resolution as a sign of American support for its war plans. On June 12, Israel prepared its warplanes, loading weapons, fuel, and drop-tanks, briefing aircrews on targets. The first air strikes hit Iran at 3 a.m. on June 13.
Grossi, who has a history with the IAEA and the Iranian nuclear dossier, allowed the agency to be used to manufacture a pretext for war, according to critics. The U.S. contacted several board member governments to secure the passage of the resolution.
The IAEA resolution, triggered by an Israeli intelligence report, has led to a formal complaint from Iran against IAEA Director General Grossi. Israel's military action followed soon after, with the U.S. playing a significant role in the IAEA's decision. The conflict's implications for regional stability and the global nuclear non-proliferation regime remain to be seen.
