Rowing Rumble: The Grand Tour of Karl-Ziegler School's Ruderwanderfahrt

Ahoy there! Let's dive into the thrilling escapades of the Karl-Ziegler School's Q2 project course - the legendarily grueling, yet triumphant, 2025 Ruderwanderfahrt!

Imagine a group of soon-to-be graduates embarking on a four-day, rowing odyssey. Over rivers, through locks, and under the watchful gaze of the Isenberg weir, they challenged Mother Nature, rowed countless kilometers, and showcased some serious teamwork. This tale is not for the faint-hearted, or those averse to a dash of rain, but it's one that'll stay etched in these scholars' memories for a lifetime.

Our epic adventure kicked off at the Karl-Ziegler School's Student Rowing Club (SRV) in Mülheim. We braved the Ruhrschleuse am Wasserbahnhof in Mülheim, the first lock passage, transporting our boats in a breathtaking display of skill and nerve. Except for a few close encounters with towering container ships on the Rhine-Herne Canal, the journey to Duisburg-Meiderich was smooth sailing.

Day two saw our weary crew faced with the hefty tasks of transporting, rigging, and de-rigging our boats. After conquering Duisburg and Witten, we turned tail towards our welcoming Mülheim harbor. Our pit stops for the following two nights were in Hattingen and Essen-Kupferdreh.

Despite fatigue and showers of rain, these intrepid students held onto their motivation and spirits, a testament to their resilience and camaraderie as they neared their oral Abitur exams. There were moments of excitement (the Isenberg weir and its surprise-filled rapids) and labor (the boat towing and carrying), which grew to become familiar routines. The ever-changing vistas of the untouched Ruhr banks were a consistent highlight (okay, we may have thrown in a few competitive games of beach volleyball, too). Shared cooking, eating, and evening game sessions completed the cozy atmosphere.

Beyond the sports and sights, this Ruderwanderfahrt offered a treasure trove of opportunities for personal growth. Through their planning, problem-solving, and adapting to the unexpected, these students learned responsibility, teamwork, and the thrill of overcoming challenges.

The Ruderwanderfahrt wasn't just a sporting event; it was an immersive, lived experience of community and practical learning far beyond the confines of the classroom.
