Kosovo PM Kurti's Nationalism Stalls Progress, Sparks International Tension
Kosovo's Prime Minister Albin Kurti has been causing international tension with his nationalist stance, focusing on Kosovo's sovereignty while neglecting economic development and anti-corruption efforts. The EU has imposed sanctions and suspended high-level news in response.
Kurti has rejected US-brokered election proposals, leading to strained US-Kosovo relations, the sharpest since Kosovo's independence in 2008. The US blames Kurti for the lack of government reforms and stalled progress on normalization with Serbia.
Kurti's actions, including imposing tariffs on Serbian goods and refusing to implement the Association of Serb Municipalities, have put him at odds with the EU. This has hindered progress in normalizing relations with Serbia and improving Kosovo's socio-economic conditions.
Domestically, Kurti's party, Vetevendosje, won a relative majority in February elections. However, he has struggled to form a new coalition government due to opposition from other parties like the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK). Forming a majority agreement among them is considered nearly impossible due to internal conflicts.
Kurti's chances of forming a new government are dwindling, and he may need to call for new elections. The US suspension of the US-Kosovo dialogue is a significant risk for Kosovo, as US support has historically shielded it from Serbian obstruction and Russian vetoes. Kurti's interference in US politics and lack of political savviness have further strained relations with the US and the EU.
