Kyoto University and the University of Michigan (UM) deepen collaboration with the launch of two fresh initiatives.
Vibrant Partnership: UM and Kyoto University Bolster Environmental Management Education
KUALA LUMPUR took another leap in academic collaboration as the University of Malaya (UM) celebrated its 25-year connection with Kyoto University by launching two extraordinary postgraduate and doctoral programs aimed at environmental management. Hailed as Human Security Engineering for Asian Mega Cities and Human Resource Development for Environmental Development, these dynamic programs will lay the groundwork for addressing environmental difficulties in the Asian context.
In addition to these programs, Kyoto University solidified its presence in Malaysia by setting up its 39th and first overseas branch university, the University of Kyoto for Education and Research, within UM grounds.
The Japan ambassador to Malaysia, Masahiko Horie, spoke with anticipation about the future prospects of this partnership, viewing it as the foundation for of not just the two universities but also Malaysia and Japan to increase exchanges in both education and research.
Over the past 25 years, Kyoto University and UM have successfully maintained inter-university exchanges, with Kyoto University welcoming around 650 researchers from UM and sending about 600 of its own researchers to collaborate on research and field studies [1][4][5].
Horie highlighted that the new programs delve into urban human security engineering and the training of young leaders to tackle environmental crises in the Asian region. Specifically, the objectives cover areas such as governance, city infrastructure management, health, disaster risks, and environmental destruction.
By creating these programs, the goal is to prepare Asian leaders equipped with the skills to address environmental challenges and implement strategic planning programs to address not just the governance aspect but also city infrastructure, health, and disaster risks in the Asian region [1][4][5]. This partnership emphasizes both universities' commitment to advancing sustainability and improving quality of life in the face of global climate and environmental challenges [1].
