Lackford Lakes offers DIY hedgehog projects and a mud kitchen construction
Marion Gray, an enthusiastic advocate for outdoor learning, recently hosted a Hedgehog care course run by Suffolk Prickles Hedgehog Rescue. The course was just one of many activities taking place at Lackford Lakes, a bustling location known for its diverse range of activities.
Marion's passion for taking children's learning beyond the classroom walls is evident. During her 6-month internship focused on outdoor learning, she has visited a Primary School to conduct a Bio Blitz survey, met with the Weekend Wildlife Club, Wild Tots, and Wild Babies, and even held a hedgehog during a Hedgehog care course.
The Bio Blitz survey aimed to identify the living organisms on the school's site. However, the survey was impacted by strong winds and eventually rain, providing a lesson in the unpredictable nature of outdoor learning. Despite the challenges, the children at the Primary School were excited to participate, demonstrating their eagerness to learn and engage with nature.
The internship at Lackford Lakes offers hands-on experience in environmental education and outdoor learning. Its purpose is to equip participants with practical skills in wildlife interpretation, habitat management, and educational program delivery. Interns like Marion Gray assist with the planning and delivery of outdoor learning activities and events, support conservation tasks, contribute to visitor engagement, and work closely with the education team. They may also gain experience in monitoring wildlife, maintaining facilities, and promoting environmental awareness.
Outdoor learning at Lackford Lakes provides children with opportunities for exploration, play, and creative and critical thinking.
