LBHS' AER Class Boosts Students' Success with Real-World Learning

Laguna Beach High School (LBHS) has pioneered a unique class called Authentic Exploratory Research (AER), offering students real-world learning opportunities. Gallup and Purdue University have identified six key elements in AER that boost students' confidence and success. The program has proven successful, with 82% of participants feeling well-prepared for success compared to just 5% of non-participants.

AER allows students to choose a year-long area of study, such as youth fashion branding, school funding gaps, or entrepreneurship comparisons. The class, designed by LBHS, offers real-world application, scientific process design, and publication opportunities. The school defines authentic learning as bridging the gap between students' passions and academic thinking.

The 'Big Six' components of AER are divided into two categories. Support includes an inspiring teacher, a caring teacher, and a mentor. Experiential elements involve project work, direct application of learning, and extracurricular activities. Students dedicate approximately 60 hours per semester to coursework, culminating in a symposium where they present their findings to the community. Tips for implementing AER in other school districts include finding a passionate realtor, empowering them, and connecting with mentors through platforms like Nepris or parent surveys.

AER at LBHS has demonstrated significant benefits for students' confidence and success. By offering real-world learning experiences and fostering authentic learning, the program has shown promising results. As the program gains recognition, other school districts are encouraged to adopt AER or its components to enhance their students' educational journey.
