The UK's leading active travel organization, Sustrans, is on the hunt for a Head of New Developments. This newly created role is designed to drive the integration of active travel principles into new housing developments, focusing on influencing professionals and decision-makers in the housing delivery sector.

In this role, the successful candidate will lead efforts to embed active travel measures in new communities, developing and promoting partnership offers that combine Sustrans' infrastructure, behavior change, and advisory services. The role requires building relationships with professionals and decision-makers to inspire the adoption of active travel in new housing projects.

The Head of New Developments will also collaborate with Sustrans' commercial and subject expert teams to develop a pipeline of funded projects from public, private, and third sectors. The ultimate goal is to enable more households to choose walking, wheeling, or cycling for everyday journeys.

The role involves frequent in-person meetings and site visits, particularly in the Midlands and South of England, and can be based in any of Sustrans' offices.

Sustrans is a practical, can-do charity that designs award-winning infrastructure solutions and works with communities to promote active travel. Over the last 30 years, the organization has developed the National Cycle Network, creating 16,500 miles of traffic-free and low-traffic routes.

The organization values an inclusive culture that supports wellness and offers a range of benefits to its employees. These include 28 days leave per annum plus bank holidays for full-time employees, a Group Personal Pension scheme with a matching contribution, a London Weighting Allowance of £4,530 for those living within a London Borough, and discount benefits.

Sustrans is also a member of the Green Commute Initiative and Cycle Scheme, offering cycle to work schemes, and provides staff volunteer days. The organization works in urban and rural areas, addressing barriers that prevent people from traveling actively.

To discuss the role, potential candidates can contact the Connected Neighbourhoods Director, Rachel Toms. The closing date for applications is 23:59, 10th August 2025, and interviews are expected to take place in person in London week commencing 18th August 2025. Applications are invited in the form of a CV and covering letter.

For those needing support during the application process, Sustrans offers a 24/7 free, impartial, and confidential support service. The organization also offers bike, computer, and season ticket loans.

In summary, the Head of New Developments leads Sustrans' efforts to ensure active travel is a foundational aspect of new residential developments, driving strategy, partnerships, and funding to create more walkable, cyclable communities. If you're passionate about promoting active travel and have experience in housing delivery, this could be the role for you.
