Lego Store Employees at Downtown Disney Form First U.S. Union
Lego Store employees at Downtown Disney are making history by attempting to form their first union among U.S. retail Lego Stores. More than 60 non-managerial staff have united, seeking respectful treatment, fair compensation, and a voice in their workplace. Hunter Gulino, a three-year employee, initiated the campaign with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 324.
The union drive, led by Gulino and Melissa Gonzalez, comes after management reduced hours following wage increases and back pay compliance with Anaheim's Measure L. Employees also cite workplace issues like air conditioning and scheduling as driving factors. The search for union founders' names proved unsuccessful, but the employees' resolve remains undeterred.
Lego can now choose to voluntarily recognize the union or decline, which would trigger a National Labor Relations Board election. The employees aim to set a precedent for future Lego workers, ensuring respectful treatment and fair compensation.
More than two dozen union organizers and Lego Store employees gathered to present management with a union petition. The employees, who number over 60, are eager to negotiate better working conditions and fair compensation. Lego's response to the petition will determine the next steps in this unprecedented unionization effort among U.S. retail Lego Stores.
