Live Discussion on Parliamentary Veterans of Javier Milei: Opposition advances Emergency Bill for Disability, now debating pension increase

In a significant turn of events in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies, the opposition has successfully achieved quorum to attempt the rejection of President Javier Milei's vetoes on the disability emergency, pension increases, and the extension of the pension moratorium.

The session began with matters of privilege, including a demand from Left Front deputy Christian Castillo for the resignation of Minister of Health Mario Lugones over deaths from contaminated fentanyl. The opposition united to surpass the required two-thirds majority to reject the veto in the Chamber of Deputies.

Notably, the deputies who expressed support for overruling Milei's veto on the emergency law for people with disabilities included a large majority of the opposition and some defectors from Milei's allies. Deputy Lilia Lemoine criticized Marcela Pagano for supporting quorum to overturn Milei's vetoes, while Patricia Bullrich accused opposition deputies of "muddying the efforts of Argentines and the achievements of the government."

Nancy Picón Martínez, a government representative, valued the government's announcement of considering increasing benefits for people with disabilities but warned that she would reject Milei's veto due to the emergency situation. Alejandro Vilca called to "defeat the veto" against the Law of Emergency in Disability and highlighted the mobilizations of the collective to demand more funds.

In addition to attempting to overturn Milei's vetoes, deputies will debate eight other bills this Wednesday. Deputy Agustín Domingo stated that emergencies are poor solutions for addressing problems and emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to the disability system. A UCR deputy claimed that the opposition has the quorum to convene to reject Milei's vetoes.

The debate over the Disability Emergency Law included the Ian Moche case, with Deputy Carla Carrizo previewing the rejection of Javier Milei's veto against the law. The Civic Coalition ratified the rejection of the presidential veto against the Disability Emergency Law.

As the debate unfolded, family members and people with disabilities, under the rain, asked to reject the veto of the disability emergency. Meanwhile, some are trying to negotiate with Milei and change positions to maintain the veto.

Milei will speak this Thursday at the Council of the Americas, hours after Congress decides whether to reject or maintain the vetoes on disability emergency and pension increase. The Government admitted that there are internal disputes against Minister Mario Lugones but assured that he is "firm" in his position.

The opposition's move to overturn Milei's vetoes has been met with strong reactions from both sides of the political spectrum. A left-wing deputy called Milei a "fascist" and considered his veto on the disability emergency "unacceptable." Deputy Pablo Juliano criticized Milei for using the "sport of monarchical veto" and accused him of anticipating going to justice if Congress rejects his veto.

On the other hand, Deputy Pablo Outes of Innovation Federal highlighted his space's support for Milei's policies but previewed his rejection of the veto on the disability emergency. Osvaldo Llancafilo criticized the announcement by presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni of increasing benefits for people with disabilities, stating that the situation needs to be addressed comprehensively.

As the key session concluded, deputies began to arrive at the chamber, with pensioners, people with disabilities, and social organizations protesting in front of Congress, urging the rejection of the vetoes. The Government has yet to announce its official response to the opposition's move.
