Breaking News: Nationwide Disaster Preparedness Drill in Taiwan

Taiwan conducted a nationwide disaster preparedness drill today, simulating a major earthquake and subsequent tsunami threat. The exercise, part of the annual National Disaster Prevention Day, began with an earthquake early warning test at 9:21am, followed by a coastal tsunami warning test at 9:30am.

All television and radio stations broadcasted a major disaster emergency alert at 10:59am, providing real-time disaster prevention information delivered via the Cell Broadcast Service. The alert featured a link to a guide offered by the Central Weather Administration (CWA), providing sheltering and evacuation advice tailored to different locations.

The CWA, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, conducted evacuation drills at schools and kindergartens. The guide includes advice for different rooms of the home, cinemas, and MRT stations. The alert also provided a link to download the Ministry of Defense's handbook, In Case of Crisis: Taiwan's National Public Safety Guide.

Premier Chen Chien-jen, the Prime Minister of Taiwan, announced the annual National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Day. President William Lai emphasized the importance of these drills, writing on Facebook that they are crucial in making safety a part of everyday life.

The simulated earthquake scenario was a magnitude 8.5 earthquake at a depth of 10km in the Ryuku Trench off eastern Taiwan, followed by a tsunami threat. The automated presidential alert sent out at 9:21am today was an earthquake disaster drill.

The drills are intended to instill a sense of security and ensure that procedures become habits. By participating in these exercises, Taiwanese citizens can become familiar with alerts and subsequent evacuation procedures, better preparing themselves for any potential disasters.
