NCAA sports betting data arrangement faces opposition from PHAI

Warning Issued over Potential Dangers from NCAA-Genius Sports Partnership

A Critical Look at NCAA's New Deal with Genius Sports

NCAA sports betting data arrangement faces opposition from PHAI

In a bold move, Genius Sports, a leading tech company in the sports industry, recently inked a deal with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Under this agreement, Genius Sports is now the exclusive provider of official NCAA data to licensed sports betting companies for March Madness and all post-season tournaments through 2032. However, not everyone is thrilled about this collaboration.

The Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI), a non-profit legal research center, has voiced its disapproval, warning about the potential dangers lurking in the shadows.

Embracing the Menace: Micro-Bets on College Sports

On Monday, PHAI issued a stern statement, expressing concerns over NCAA's decision to partner with Genius Sports for selling real-time sports data to the betting industry. According to PHAI, this partnership will usher in AI-driven micro-betting on college sports.

Micro-betting is a form of online sports wagering known for its addictive nature. By leveraging machine learning and AI, micro-bets offer a constant stream of betting opportunities. PHAI warns that this endless stream heightens the risk of gambling-related harm and addiction, a concern they believe the NCAA should prioritize.

A Shift in Priorities: Profits Over Public Health

Barely a few months ago, NCAA's President, Charlie Baker, called for a federal ban on college prop bets. Yet, NCAA's recent decision seems to contradict that stand. Richard Daynard, PHAI's Founder and President, criticized the NCAA for joining forces with the gambling industry instead of fighting it.

Daynard urged for a comprehensive public health response at both federal and state levels, emphasizing that PHAI will continue its mission to protect the public from the uncontrolled gambling industry. Mark Gottlieb, PHAI's Executive Director, echoed the concern, highlighting the increased risk of addiction and serious harm that this partnership may bring.

Dr. Harry Levant, PHAI's Director of Gambling Policy, shared similar sentiments, expressing concern over the potential gambling-related harm that the agreement could cause. He suggested that bettors would be able to wager on almost everything a player does in each game.

Moreover, the PHAI executives raised concerns over the NCAA's decision to use the deal's revenue to fund education programs.

Transparency Under the Scrutiny

The PHAI has also criticized the NCAA for its lack of transparency regarding the details of the deal struck with Genius Sports. The executives feel that the NCAA missed an opportunity to lead the charge in promoting comprehensive public health reform in the gambling industry.
