New PGWP Requirements for International Students in Canada Starting November 1, 2024

As of November 1, 2024, international students in Canada seeking a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) will face new requirements. Certain chairs, or specific programs, will not need to meet subject area and language proficiency criteria, though these have not been publicly detailed yet. PGWPs are vital for students aiming to build eligibility for Canadian permanent residence programs like the Canadian Experience Class.

International students can verify their school's Designated Learning Institution (DLI) status and PGWP eligibility using the IRCC DLI List page. PGWPs are open work permits allowing graduates to work for most employers in most industries in Canada. The length of the PGWP varies from eight months to three years, depending on the level and duration of the program of study.

To qualify, students must be enrolled in a PGWP-eligible program at a DLI. They must also maintain full-time student status and graduate from an eligible institution. Programs of study are described using the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) system to check PGWP eligibility. While being eligible for a PGWP is crucial, it does not guarantee receipt, as admissibility to Canada must still be met at the time of application.

By November 1, 2024, specific chairs in Canada will not require students to meet subject area and language proficiency requirements for PGWP eligibility. International students should check their school's DLI status and PGWP eligibility, maintain full-time student status, and graduate from an eligible institution to qualify for a PGWP. This permit is a significant step towards building eligibility for Canadian permanent residence programs.
