From the Schmoll Chatterbox: The Unbelievers Peering at the Pope

A Rant by Thomas Schmoll

Observers Gaze at the Pontiff

I reckon belief matters in these days and times, so let me spit this out: I seldom watch the boob tube, just to muffle the chatter in my brain while scarfing down grub, diverting my ears from the drone of my own thoughts. Given my irregular meal schedule, I sample a smorgasbord of programs, seldom lingering for more than a minute, as I find dumbing down reality for the dumb crowd just plain annoying.

Especially shows like "Brisant" make my skin crawl when, after accounts of "Oh, the horror in Ukraine" or "Oh, the destruction in the earthquake zone," they ramble on about health concerns for the Empress of Schlabumbia and the Queen of Takkatukkaland, before shifting to domestic advice and fires in the neighborhood, triumphantly announcing, "We can confirm: Muschi the cat was spared!" Phew, thank heaven for that!

The Popery Fever

ARD’s Live Coverage of the Conclave

“Live footage” of the Sistine Chapel's chimney? Oh, and it's always pointing skyward, as of course a proper chimney would! But broadcasters must sensationalize the papal election, given the Catholic Church's immense influence in Germany: it's still shrinking.

“Live footage” of, say, Tuesday or Friday, wouldn't garner much attention, now, would it? But always with the chimney, the roof adornment. Somber news anchors make sensational claims, like, "The smoke could change color at any moment, signaling the selection of a new pontiff." What a spectacle, akin to a bonfire's heat! Then a lady exclaims, "I'm so excited!"

A St. Peter's Square Reporter's Anticlimax

Not even an election without consequence for the majority of Germans can dampen enthusiasm—not in this popery fervor! "Each and every round brings its own degree of excitement," a reporter on another ARD show exclaimed, standing near St. Peter's Square in Rome. I thought to myself, "Excuse me, but why in the world would one find excitement over the selection of an ecclesiastical leader with no impact on my life?" And I chuckled, imagining how thrilling it would be if I could cast a ballot, admiring Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel without a grouchy guard shooing me away. But even if I were in the age bracket, I wouldn't aspire to become a cardinal.

The Long-Awaited Pope

It's common knowledge that the winner of this power struggle is usually someone hardly known outside the Vatican walls, save for reporters who constantly kiss up to popes and curia members. The days pass in speculation and interpretation, endlessly dissecting the minutiae. "Relief" I detected on ZDF's broadcast: "No deadlock." Well, four rounds over two days—even Friedrich Merz, another Catholic, managed to win in two rounds within a single day, backed by the atheistic left party. Now we have ecumenism in the Bundestag. A dream for all religious folk!

A Handpicked Prophet

“Moderate man of the center” is now the new Pope Leo XIV, according to an assortment of news feeds. German public television adorned its report on Leo's Peruvian past with the tune "El cóndor pasa," squeezing in every cliché possible. The Peruvians were wet with joy, I was informed. Quite a splurge for such coverage, compared to the chimney's antics!

The Un Certain Future

“Perhaps he’ll speak the first Sunday prayer tomorrow,” I heard. Maybe, maybe not. Because, as they always say, "Only God knows." But the uncertainty just makes it that much more exciting and worthy of attention, of course. Though I must admit, I wondered, "Given that it’s either Tuesday or Friday, will he really speak a Sunday prayer?" But I digress.

Global Expectations

Over in Washington, I learned—before any first poll results—that the American papacy was linked with "great hope" and that "this pope could be a unifying element." Hardly a prophet, Trump might think he'd make a better pope. The whole thing reminded me of the crude interpretations that followed Argentina's football World Cup win of 2022, when a Buenos Aires correspondent on ARD's “Morning Magazine” spoke of poverty, debt, and inflation, claiming, "People often suffer from these conditions in their daily lives. And now, this win—this redemption—this fighting spirit they need in their lives." Chainsaws reign! The new pope may not use one, but thank goodness for that.
