India's tech industry has attracted significant foreign investment, ranking second globally. Meanwhile, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is set to expand its presence in the country, with plans for a major data centre and a new office in New Delhi.

Between April 2024 and March 2025, India's software and hardware industry drew substantial foreign direct investment (FDI), securing the second spot globally. This influx of investment reflects the country's growing appeal in the tech sector.

OpenAI, the AI powerhouse, is eyeing India for expansion. CEO Sam Altman may announce the project during an upcoming visit. The company aims to build a 1GW-capacity data centre in the country, a significant step in bolstering AI infrastructure in the region. This project is part of the Stargate venture, which plans to invest up to $500bn in AI infrastructure both in the US and overseas. OpenAI is currently seeking local partners for this ambitious endeavour, though specific names have not been disclosed. The company has previously partnered with Oracle and SoftBank for data centre projects in the US and UAE.

OpenAI has already made strides in India with the recent launch of its cheapest subscription model for ChatGPT. This move has contributed to India becoming OpenAI's second-largest market by user base for ChatGPT. To further strengthen its presence, OpenAI will open its first India office in New Delhi later this year.

India's tech industry continues to attract substantial foreign investment, with OpenAI's expansion plans being a notable development. The proposed 1GW data centre project, along with the opening of the first India office, signals OpenAI's commitment to the Indian market. These moves are expected to significantly enhance AI infrastructure and services in the country.
